How to clear clipboard history on exit?

Clipdiary clipboard manager saves the complete history of everything you copied. It is very useful to have access to the clipboard data.
Some of our users need to automatically clear the clipboard history on the computer reboot. To achieve this you should

  • Go to the Database tab in the program Options

  • Set the maximum number of saved clips to "0"

Clipdiary will monitor the clipboard and save all copied data, but clear the saved history when you shut down the computer or exit Clipdiary.

Improved quickly copying mechanism in Clipdiary

Clipdiary v2.6 appeared. In this version we improved work with quickly copying clipboard history items back to the clipboard. We made it more convenient and basicaly more quick.

To begin with, we solved the problem with not ideal behaviour of the tooltip which shows the copied text. The tooltip appeared at the screen once you pressed Ctrl + Shift + Arrow up and disappeared in two seconds. This caused some inconvenience - too little time to read some long clip and in case of small clip that you can read in a second the tooltip remained on the screen odd time and interfered you from work.

Now you control the time it is displayed by yourself. Its very simple - just hold the keys pressed as much time as you need to select the clip. As soon as you release buttons the tooltip disappeares.

And most importantly we added an option to automatically paste the selected clip after it is copied to the clipboard. In the previous version you could use the key combination (Ctrl + Shift + Arrow up\down) for quickly copying item from the clipboard history to the clipboard. Then you should hit Ctrl + V to paste data. Now you don't have to do even this! The new option (you can switch it on on the Hot Keys tab in the Program Options) makes Clipdiary automatically paste the selected clip as soon as you release buttons.

Remember that if you pasted the wrong text you can simply hit Ctrl+Z to cancel the changes you made.

Paste faster, do not lose your time :)

How to quickly copy recently copied data back to the clipboard

When work with Clipdiary to see the clipboard history you usualy open clipboard history viewer window.

But why open the window every time if you can copy items from the clipboard history back to clipboard without opening Clipdiary? You can save your time and improve productivity using the extra hot keys:

  • Ctrl+Shift+Up - quickly copy the previous clipboard history item back to the clipboard

  • Ctrl+Shift+Down - quickly copy the next clipboard history item back to the clipboard

  • You can change the default hotkeys in the Options.

After pressing the above hotkeys the previous/next clip will be copied to the clipboard and you'll see the tooltip with the full text of the selected clip.
The rest is simple. Just press Ctrl+V and paste the needed clipboard history item from the clipboard.

Control tooltip with the full text of clipboard history item

When open Clipdiary you see the clipboard history items in reverse chronological order. There are 50 clips per page by default. You can config the number of displayed items by yourself
For each clip only the title is displayed, not more than 50 symbols. By the way, do you know that you can give your own names to the clips?
The full text of the selected clip is shown in the tooltip near the clipboard history viewer.
The tooltip is shown for only 5 seconds, than it is hidden and is shown again only after you select the next clip.
Sometimes it is not convenient. If the full text of the clip is little too long you do not have time to read it. So we've added extra keys to control the tooltip

  • Arrow Right - show the tooltip for the selected clipboard history clip and do not hide it automatically

  • Arrow Left - hide the tooltip for the current clip

Search through the clipboard history

There is a Search option in Clipdiary. You can search through the saved clipboard history to find the data you copied some time ago.
To do this just type the search condition into the search field at the bottom of Clipdiary's Window and hit the 'Search' button. You'll see only clips that satisfy the search condition.

To return to the complete clipboard history hit the 'Reset' button or F9 key on the keyboard. Selection will be automatically moved to the last captured clip.

But if you do not want to move the focus to the last copied text and need it to remain on the currently selected clip from the search results, just hit Ctrl+F9 instead of the 'Reset' button or F9.

This could be very helpful when you need to find some item and do not remember its text but remember the text of the clip that was copied near the needed one.

Config number of clipboard history items that are displayed per page

When you open Clipdiary you see the newest items of clipboard history. There are 50 clips per page by default. To see the previous 50 clips you should go to the previous page (click navigation buttons '<' at the bottom of clipboard history viewer window).

Users often ask how to change number of clips that are displayed per page. There is no such option in GUI but you can do the following:

  1. Close Clipdiary
  2. Open config file - C:\Documents and Settings\User name\ApplicationData\Clipdiary\clipdiary.cfg in any text editor
  3. Find "[Options]"
  4. Write "CountClipAtPage=40" on the next line. 40 is number of clips that are displayed per page. If you want 30 or 10, write "CountClipAtPage=30" or "CountClipAtPage=10".
You should get something like
[Options]
CountClipAtPage=40

Then start Clipdiary and make sure that you see as many clips per page, as you want.

So you can change a number of clips to avoid the need to use the vertical scrollbar in Clipdiary main window.
Now that is the only way to config number of clipboard history items that are displayed per page. We suppose to add this option to GUI in the next versions.

Starting with version 2.8 you can config number of clipboard history items per page in the program options.

Drag&drop clips

Now you can drag-and-drop clips from Clipdiary to any edit field.
That is a great feature! I myself use it very often, it saves my time.
For example, you need to copy and paste several text fragments from one application to some other.
First you should copy the first fragment and paste it to new place, then the second fragment and so on. Now you can do the following:
1. Copy all the fragments, all of them will be saved in clipboard history.
2. Open Clipdiary.
3. Tell Clipdiary to stay on top (click File->Always on Top).
4. Drag&drop items to needed application.

You'd especially like this feature if you prefer working with mouse rather than with keyboard.

Give to clips your own names

Today I am going to describe an ability to assign names to clips.
There were lots of users who asked us to implement such feature, and you can see it now in Clipdiary.
Starting with version 2.4 you can give own name to any clip. So if you copied information that may be needed some time later, but you do not know where to write it down, you can save it in Clipdiary. You give clip appropriate name to find it easier later.

How it works?
1. Copy text to the clipboard. It automatically will be recorded by Clipdiary and saved in clipboard history.
2. Open Clipdiary (Ctrl+D by default, or click Clipdiary's icon in the system tray).
3. Select the item and press F2 on keyboard, or right-click the item and choose "Rename" from the context menu.
4. Enter new title for this clipboard history entry and press OK.
5. Now you see your item with suitable title, so you can find it easily later.

We hope this feature will help you safely store data and easily find it.
